Grow Your Career with an Industry Leader
We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Shop Manager to lead our shop team and help keep our fleet of trucks, heavy equipment, and vehicles safe, reliable, and ready to support daily field operations.
This is an opportunity for a strong diesel mechanic and working leader who enjoys solving problems, developing technicians, improving shop operations, and taking ownership of results. The right person will lead by example, maintain high standards for safety and workmanship, and help build a team that keeps our operations moving.
What You'll Do
- Lead and Develop the Team: Coordinate daily shop assignments, guide technicians, provide hands-on training, and help build a skilled, accountable, and dependable team.
- Oversee Maintenance and Repairs: Diagnose complex mechanical issues, support repairs, and coordinate preventive maintenance for heavy-duty diesel trucks, diesel-powered equipment, and gasoline and hybrid vehicles.
- Maintain Safety and Compliance: Oversee required DOT and California BIT inspections, track inspection deadlines, ensure accurate documentation, and make sure identified safety concerns are addressed before equipment returns to service.
- Keep Operations Moving: Prioritize work orders, coordinate parts and field service needs, communicate repair timelines, and minimize equipment downtime that affects field operations.
- Improve Shop Organization: Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop, including tools, parts inventory, supplies, and equipment.
- Monitor Performance: Review repair turnaround times, technician productivity, maintenance schedules, inspection completion, and shop costs to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Manage Vendors and Expenses: Maintain vendor relationships, negotiate competitive pricing, coordinate purchase orders, and ensure invoices and shop records are processed accurately.
- Support Fleet Leadership: Partner with the Fleet Manager on staffing, training, cost control, repair recommendations, and operational improvements. Help manage daily shop operations independently when the Fleet Manager is away.
What We're Looking For
- High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of relevant education, technical training, and experience.
- Strong hands-on experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing heavy-duty diesel trucks and diesel-powered heavy equipment.
- Experience servicing gasoline and hybrid vehicles.
- Previous experience as a lead technician, shop foreman, supervisor, or working technical leader.
- Working knowledge of DOT maintenance and inspection requirements and/or California's Basic Inspection of Terminals (BIT) program.
- Ability to lead a team, delegate work, coach technicians, and hold employees accountable for quality and performance.
- Strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to manage competing priorities with minimal supervision.
- Experience using fleet maintenance software, GPS systems, work order systems, and spreadsheets. Fleetio experience is a plus.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technicians, field personnel, vendors, and management.
- Relevant diesel, automotive, or equipment technician certifications and DOT/BIT training are preferred.
